A Update for Our Friends

Information from Gary Joiner
Edited by Marilyn Joiner

CHANGE WILL OCCUR IN LOUISIANA – And You Can Do Something NOW

Louisiana has just experienced a historic election. The two candidates for governor are a woman and the son of Indian immigrants, each with outstanding qualifications for the office. In addition, the leading candidate for governor (oversight of Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism which includes Mansfield State Historic Site) won the primary outright. They ALL need to hear from you – that you think this is an important issue. This is particularly important in the case of Kathleen Babineaux Blanco. She was on the Public Service Commission and interacted regularly with the large utilities in Louisiana – she knows THEM well – she needs to know US well too. PLEASE write three letters – even a short note is fine – telling them you care about the Mansfield State Historic Site and preservation of key sites within the battlefield that are endangered. The run-off election is November 15 – so write now!

GOVERNOR RUN-OFF
Bobby Jindal (R) Led in primary with 32% His campaign office is P.O. Box 44290, Baton Rouge LA 70804-4290
Kathleen Babineaux Blanco (D) leading of four major Democrat candidates with 18%
Write her campaign office to get the most attention: P.O. Box 80722, Lafayette, LA 70598 Her e-mail address is:
kblanco@crt.state.la.us.

LT. GOVERNOR
Mitch Landrieu -- Won in primary. We must now rely on his wisdom – and courage – to do what has to be done with the preservation of this battlefield. Here is his address and his legislative e-mail: Rep. Mitch Landrieu, 1100 Poydras St. Box 20, New Orleans, LA 70163. E-mail:
larep089@legis.state.la.us You may be interested to know that he was the only candidate that responded to Marilyn’s letter promptly. He did so with a handwritten note and referenced the issue.

Please point out:

  • You care about the Mansfield State Historic Site and the Mansfield Battlefield.
  • You believe it is important to save key historic portions of the battlefield.
  • The site has great tourism potential and thus economic relevance in addition to its historic relevance.
  • The 140th anniversary is coming up in April and people from throughout the country will be coming to Mansfield
due to its focus as one of the most endangered historic battlefields in the country.

WHAT A WEEKEND! What a Fantastic Fundraiser!

We have just been part of an outstanding Commemorative Weekend at the Mansfield State Historic site coordinated by Friends member Chuck McMichael. Chuck, also a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Richard Taylor Camp, called on his fellow SCV members to develop and produce this event, and there is absolutely no doubt that Chuck has a lot of clout. Thank you, Chuck!

The weekend featured a reception hosted by UDC (United Daughters of the Confederacy) ladies, a day-long seminar and re-enactment with a great lunch, and a memorial service on Sunday. Speakers included Ron Wilson, SCV Commander in Chief; Kelly Barrow, SCV Historian in Chief; Steve Bounds, State Historic Site Manager, and Gary, who spoke on “The Second Battle of Mansfield.” This event raised hundreds of dollars for the Friends, and we appreciate the effort put into making this weekend a rousing success. In addition, we must thank the outstanding contributions of Steve Bounds, manager of the state historic site, and Don Smith, park ranger, who shared their expertise and bent over backwards to make this a great experience for all. Seeing an encampment on the grounds is like walking back into history. Over 250 school children saw a slice of history on Friday. We sold Gary’s two latest books at the event and donated $3 of the sales from each to the Friends. We appreciate the labors of love for history that were apparent at this event. Check out our Web site for pictures of the weekend’s activities. http://www.mansfieldbattlefield.org/ Several people who had not visited the site before – or who had never approached from the south were shocked at the site of the lignite mining. You can see the mining shovel in action on our site.

POWERFUL FRIENDS – Tulane Environmental Law Center

Gary and our good Friend Dan Laney of the Austin Civil War Round Table visited the Tulane Environmental Law Center last month to see what they could do to support preservation of this historic battlefield. They will be wonderful allies, and we are currently discussing what they can do and who will be involved. We’ll update you on this.

OUR YOUNGEST MEMBER

Several people have mentioned the story of the young Canadian boy who gave his baseball glove savings to the Friends. Please check our Web site for the full text of this endearing letter. What a story!

EASEMENTS

Our easement initiative that has protected agricultural lands from incursion is meeting success, and we have additional interest in that project. We’ll update you on that as developments occur.

OUR B&B FRIENDS – For your next visit to Mansfield

We heard at the Commemorative Weekend that some people didn’t realize there was a B&B in Mansfield, so we want to re-emphasize that for you. Not only is there a B&B but one that has membership in the Friends. If you’re planning to attend the 140th anniversary weekend and gigantic reenactment next April, you will want to make your reservations early. Tell them you heard about it through the Friends. Moonlight and Lace B&B, Pam Herberlie. Pam can be reached at 318-871-5591 or at pamheb@bellsouth.net. We heard from staff at the historic site that the reenactment (which has usually been Louisiana and Texas reenactors) will be supplemented by reenactors from throughout the country, thanks to the national focus on the battlefield. They have already been receiving calls and questions about the events scheduled for the first weekend in April, 2004.

DO YOU HAVE ANCESTORS WHO FOUGHT IN THE RED RIVER CAMPAIGN?

We are compiling information on Red River Campaign participants. We’re creating a database of Union and Confederate soldiers and would like to have information as well as pictures too. We can accept scans or copies of images.
