REGISTER FOR THE ANNUAL MEETING ON OCTOBER 2
We have a great agenda for the annual meeting, and, thanks to a great price from the caterer, our registration will be a couple of dollars less than anticipated. We're excited to hear from some of you that you've already put this on your calendar. We've asked several elected officials (mayor of Mansfield, state senator, state representative) to join us as well as a representative from the Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism. The good news is that with the great price we have from our caterer, we are able to reduce the registration to $15 from the anticipated $18. Here's our schedule for the day.

WHAT TO DO ON YOUR TRIP
As you probably recall, we have a B&B in Mansfield that is a member of the Friends. We know the house since it's next to the home of our cousins who are sponsoring the meeting for us at the church hall. (Outside groups using the church facilities must be sponsored by a church member.) You can call Pam Herberlie at 318-871-5591 for reservations if you want to stay here. Sims and Sandra Calhoun have Carmel Lake Bed & Breakfast in Mansfield as well. Their phone is 872-4234.
There is RV parking at Rockwood on Highway 509 Phone 872-4460, Shady Oakes Trailer Park Phone James Lynch at 872-4646, and Davidson's Trailer Park. We really can't speak to the RV facilities since we don't have one, and we've not stayed in a motel in Mansfield, but there are two: Mansfield Inn , 872-5034, Burton's Gatehouse Inn, 872-3601. If you want to stay in Shreveport, that's a possible choice as well since there are many more facilities. (In case you didn't know it, we also have five casinos with hotels -- Hollywood, Sam's Town, Horseshoe, Isle of Capri and Boom Town -- the last three are across the river in Bossier City.) The closest Shreveport hotel to Mansfield is off East 70th Street--a Clarion--east of I-49. It takes about 35 to 40 minutes to drive south to Mansfield on I-49.
Mansfield Attractions: LOG COURT HOUSE DeSoto Parish was created out of Natchitoches and Caddo parishes in 1843. A log courthouse and a jail were built for $900. The old log courthouse was rediscovered in the wall of an old home being demolished. Funds were raised for restoration and preservation. It's located at the Mini Park on Polk Street.
There's a new antique mall/flea market in downtown Mansfield. You'll also find antiques and dining in Grand Cane, north of Mansfield on Highway 171.
You can visit the DeSoto Parish Web site at
www.desotoparishchamber.net.
The Shreveport Bossier Convention & Tourist Bureau's Web site is www.shreveportbossier.org. They generally have some "deals" on accommodations. The state's Web site is www.louisianatravel.com.
BOARD ELECTION - HELP WANTED
We've been working on a very short staff. We have a board of directors and the board appoints/elects its officers. If you are able to serve on the board and can attend board meetings two to four times a year, please let us know you would like to be nominated. The registration form includes a space for you to do so. If you cannot attend, you may send a Proxy, authorizing someone to cast a vote for you.
If you are able to assist at a registration table or with renewals or help monitor the refreshment table, please indicate your availability. If you work registration, you'll be glad to know that all of the name tags will be created in advance. (We're going to have special recognition for our Honor Roll members attending.)
YOUR MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL
Since we're including the meeting reservation in this newsletter, we are not adding the renewal form. A renewal form was included in the July newsletter. That newsletter plus a regular membership form are available online.
GREAT NEWS - CONSORTIUM
We promised some special news for this newsletter. A Red River Consortium is in the planning stages. We have agreed to be part of this. Other potential partners contacted are the Cane River National Heritage Area, Cane River Creole National Historical Park, Friends of Fort DeRussy, Louisiana State Parks, Louisiana State University-Alexandria, Louisiana State University-Shreveport, Northwestern State University and the Red River Waterway Commission. The stated purpose will be "to join together to preserve, promote and interpret sites connected with the history of the Red River Campaign through public and private partnerships." This is a substantial list of possible partners and the consortium will help to draw further attention to importance of this as a site with both historic and economic development importance.
HONOR ROLL
Take a minute to review the names on our Honor Roll. These generous people and groups have joined at our legacy level or at the business/organization members. They have done some "extra deep" digging to make a donation of $100 or greater. If you see someone you know on the list or you know of the organization or business, please give them your personal "thanks" for their generosity.
